PET (polyethylene terephthalate)
We distribute bottle-grade PET for preforms and packaging for water, soft drinks and food, from Murcia to the whole of Spain.
PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the plastic used for water and soft-drink bottles: transparent, light, strong and a barrier to gases.
It is processed by first injection moulding a preform, which is then stretch blow moulded to form the bottle.
Types
- Bottle grade
- Mineral water, carbonated soft drinks, oil and food. Grades differ in their intrinsic viscosity.
How to choose the grade
The key figure is the intrinsic viscosity (IV): around 0.76–0.80 dl/g for water and food, and 0.80–0.85 dl/g for carbonated drinks, which need greater pressure resistance. It must be dried thoroughly before processing: wet PET loses its properties.
Available grades
| Product | Type | Melt flow / viscosity | Process | Main use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Octal PET GP 01 | Bottle-grade PET (copolymer) | 0.80 ± 0.02 dl/g | Injection stretch blow moulding | Water bottles |
| Octal PET SG 04 | Bottle-grade PET (copolymer) | 0.82 ± 0.02 dl/g | Injection stretch blow moulding, Sheet extrusion | Carbonated soft drinks |
Frequently asked questions
What is the intrinsic viscosity of PET?
It is a measure of the length of its chains: the higher the viscosity, the greater the mechanical strength. That is why carbonated soft-drink bottles use higher-viscosity PET than water bottles.
